Colors can signify attendance, achievements or good behavior: such as a gold star patch for each practice or game attended; red star for hustle or brave play; blue star for good defense, etc. Use the star patches to reward behavior you want to encourage (Good Attitude).
Star patches are for every sport, including basketball, football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, rugby, gymnastics, cheerleading, volleyball, swimming, wrestling and track.
Star patches can either be ironed on a shirt, shorts or hat, or you can punch a hole in them and attach them to a sports bag using a bead chain or a decorative cord.
Star patches can be used to encourage and reward any type of behavior. They’ve even been used to toilet train small children.
Don't give out more than 3 patches per player per practice, or 3 per player per game, otherwise they lose their value & the kids aren't as excited to get them.
Tip: Give the “star patches” out sparingly at halftime or at the end of the game in front of the entire team and even in front of parents...make a BIG DEAL out of brave, aggressive play, even more so than skillful play...not every player can be skillful, but all can be tough, brave and aggressive. The team that hustles the most and is the most aggressive will usually win the game. This is increasingly important at older ages. (It doesn’t apply to U-6, just have fun!)
Praise for Star Patches and How Coaches Use Star Patches to Motivate Players
How wrestling coaches use Star Patches:
The Star Patches have worked out so well for out wrestling team. We give them out for guys who take what they learn in practice and use it on the mat. A win or a loss doesn’t matter to us, as long as they are learning and improving. These awards have been a great addition to our program. What a delight it was to see one of our guys with a star ironed on to his practice shirt sleeve.
