SoccerHelp Premium is:
  • Success Stories: A U-13 Boys coach from Texas, USA went from winning only 3 of the 30 prior games to a 6-2-2 record (6 wins) by using the Premium program, and a U-10 Girls coach from Missouri, USA was thinking of quitting after losing every game for 3 seasons, only scoring one goal in the last 8 games and having many girls leave the team due to the lack of success, but by using the Premium program went 4-5-3, won the last game 7-2 and said "wild horses couldn't keep me from coaching next fall". SoccerHelp Premium has also helped undefeated teams to quickly improve and get even better; see the "Detailed Site Map" below, "14 Tips & Tactics For Undefeated U-12 Rec Coach" for a specific example. (These are just three examples. See "Testimonials and Success Stories" and "More Praise For SoccerHelp Premium" for more).
  • Immediate access to over 1,500 printed pages of information, over 5,000 easy-to-use internal links and 70 of our copyrighted Practice Games.
  • Over 70 Practice Games, each rated by age appropriateness and quality. (Premium Practice games are much better than drills. They are fun and your team will improve by playing the games. Also, the games involve competition and pressure, which drills don't, and will better prepare your players for real games. SoccerHelp Practice Games are selected from hundreds of drills and games that we evaluate. Less than 5% are selected and those that are selected are then adapted to meet our standards. See a complete list of Practice Games below in the copy of the "Site Maps" of Premium Content.)
  • Premium soccer skills, soccer moves, tips, tactics and strategies.
  • Practice Plans (pre-planned practices)
  • A user-friendly site with many internal links that is much easier to use than a book, but that can be printed as needed
  • See the detailed list of Premium Contents below
  • Designed to help recreational teams ages 5-Adult and travel teams up to U-12. Your team and individual players will improve and you will gain confidence as a coach. This program has helped coaches go in one season from losing almost all of their games to winning most of their games. Premium will help teams quickly improve, score more goals, play better defense and win more games. (Although Premium contains many Practice Games and Practice Plans for U-6 teams, we recommend just having fun until U-8).

DETAILED SITE MAP

ASSIGNING SOCCER POSITIONS (U-10 & Older)

Preface: Trying to figure out the best positions for your players isn't only about winning, it is also about putting young players in a position they enjoy and where they can be successful. Some positions require different skills, abilities, and personality traits than others.

  1. Should you rotate players to all positions?
  2. Selecting a Striker or Center Forward
  3. Selecting "Wing" Forwards
  4. The critical positions on Recreational teams
  5. Selecting Fullbacks and Defensive Midfielders
  6. Selecting a Center Midfielder or Center Offensive Midfielder
  7. How to select a goalkeeper
  8. Where to play your weakest players
    1. Players afraid of contact
    2. Players who are slow
    3. Players with weak ball skills
  9. Where to play a great, dominant player.

ATTACKING PLAN

(For recreational teams ages 10 and older, it is important to have a simple and realistic attacking plan that players understand & can execute. Your attacking plan should be simple and easy to understand; if it is complex your players may become hesitant and frustrated. After 5 years of teaching select and recreational teams a short passing style of attack that "built from the back" (including goal kicks and short corners), I switched to the attacking plan described in "Attacking Plan" at SoccerHelp Premium. Since I switched, our record is 15-1 with an average score of 6-2. This was with 2 different teams in a recreational league (Boys U-15) where the players are assigned to try to balance the teams. We had more fun and actually practiced less than previously (only about three 90 minute practices before the first game and then 3 or 4 times during the eight game season).

35 ATTACKING TIPS, TACTICS & STRATEGIES

CATENNACIO

(How this style of play, that was invented in the 1950's, has had a lasting impact on soccer formations and styles of play)

CHECKLIST OF SOCCER SKILLS, TACTICS & TIPS

  1. Good sportsmanship
  2. Basic soccer skills
  3. Tips for both offense & defense
  4. Offensive play
  5. Defensive play
  6. Rules and offensive & defensive tactics
  7. Goalkeepers

22 COACHING "RULES"

(Stating important concepts as simple "rules" is a useful way to teach young players, since most have been taught to follow the rules. These "Rules" are easy to teach, will quickly improve your team's play and can be worth several goals per game.)

10 DEFENSE TIPS & TACTICS FOR REC TEAMS (Keywords are soccer defense, First Defender, soccer formations, Second Defender, win the ball, soccer zone defense and man marking defense)

EXPANDED LIST OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS FOR A REC SOCCER COACH TO TEACH

FORMATIONS (Systems of Play)

(Does your team give up goals on breakaways, have trouble playing good offense or defense in the midfield, or not score enough goals? The problem may be that you are trying to make your team fit a formation and style of play instead of using a formation and style of play that fits your team. The formations that work for Select or Travel teams usually don't work well for Rec teams. Rec coaches usually don't have the time to teach complex systems of play, and complex formations and styles of play can cause players to become hesitant and frustrated. The easiest thing you can do to cause a huge improvement in your team's play is to change to a simplified, easy-to-teach formation and style of play that gives your team the best chance of being successful. SoccerHelp Premium explains how to choose and teach simplified Formations that are easy to teach and really work for Recreational teams. The formations and style of play explained in "Attacking Plan", "Scoring More Goals", "Quick Team Improvement Program" and "Formations" on Soccerhelp Premium will not only result in your Rec team winning more games, but your team will play better, have more fun, and players and coaches will gain a better understanding of the game. For example, Coach Scott, a Texas USA U-13 Boys coach, had only won 1 game of the past 20, but switched to a 3-2-2-3 formation and style of play as explained in Premium and went 6-2-2 (6 wins with basically the same team) and finished in second place. And Coach Lisa's U-11 Girls team (also of Texas USA) switched to a 3-2-2-3, and doubled their goal production (from an average of 2 to 4 per game). The great thing about both these cases is that it only took a few practices to see the results.)

11 IDEAS FOR U-9 GIRLS TRAVEL COACH TO INCREASE SCORING

The following was sent to one of our SoccerHelp "Testers" coaches, a U-9 Girls Travel Coach from Wisconsin USA. The Testers coaches are volunteers who try out SoccerHelp practice games, tips and tactics and give us feedback that helps improve the SoccerHelp program. The coach had just joined the Testers Program and had written that he had a good team but was losing most games, even those they dominated, due to a lack of scoring. He asked for any ideas we might have. Following is our response:

SCORING MORE GOALS

  1. Diagnosing why your team isn't scoring more goals
    1. 2 reasons why you aren't scoring more goals
    2. Increasing your number of shots
    3. Increasing your scoring percentage

    5. Evaluating whether a different formation would work better
  2. The 7 ways most soccer goals are scored
  3. 35 soccer attacking tips, tactics & strategies (breakaways, penalty kicks, free kicks, throw ins, far post play, wing attack vs. frontal attack, corner kicks, types of shots, movement off the ball, direct vs. indirect attack, target forwards, support, rebounds, passing to space vs. passing to feet, and more)

SHORT CORNER SET PLAY AND CORNER KICK ATTACKING STRATEGIES (U-10 & up)

(Our favorite short corner attacking play for Rec teams and corner kick attacking strategies are described below. Try "short corners" 50% of the time. Your chances of scoring on the short corner set play described below are better than on a "long corner" and you will improve your chances of scoring when you try a long corner by keeping the opposing defense off balance. Also, this short corner play will teach your team some valuable attacking and teamwork concepts, which are described at the end of this document, and it is fun and easy to teach. You can teach it before a game in about 5 minutes (but be careful to not let your opponent see you or you will lose the element of surprise).

23 OF THE BEST SOCCERHELP TIPS & TACTICS

(Includes 4 things you should do at your first practice with new players, 6 important things to watch for when evaluating the best positions for your players, how to teach players to "Pass To Space", kick-offs, how to teach 2 simple types of "movement off the ball" that will really help your attack, and more).

14 TIPS & TACTICS FOR UNDEFEATED U-12 REC COACH

(The following was sent to one of our SoccerHelp "Testers" coaches, a U-12 Rec Coach from Pennsylvania USA who hadn't lost a game in a year, but still wanted to improve and found some of the SoccerHelp suggestions helpful. (The "Testers" coaches are volunteers who try out SoccerHelp practice games, tips and tactics and give us feedback that helps us improve the SoccerHelp program). These tips would also be appropriate for most Rec teams ages U-10 thru U-17. In his e-mail he said: "I received your suggestions and implemented several of them at practice. The kids had fun. The following Sunday we beat a team 7-0 that we usually beat, but not that bad. We got a game in last Thursday against a team that was 8-0 during the Fall season. We won 2-0 at their field and should have scored a few more. We were missing 2 of our top 3 goal scorers. I think a lot of the improvement in our play the past few weeks has been a result of your suggestions and simplification of our playing system. I did modify the system such that we play a 3-2-3-2 instead of a 3-2-2-3. My center mids are good enough to fill the center on offense when necessary, but disciplined enough to play defense first in the midfield. I also tell my defensive mids that they are Stoppers. This terminology keeps them positioned with a defensive mindset but ready to jump into the attack. If I tell them they are defensive mids they will end up in the opposing team's Penalty Box." Our response is below.)
